Your immune system is your friend. It protects your body from infection. Give it your full support and, as with any friend, there will be perks.
What I call the autumn equinox or Mabon, some call the Cold and Flu season. This should be a perfect time to walk in wild places, visit forests and enjoy their peaceful aroma while taking long breaths and calmly preparing for a period of rest and introspection but it can also be a time for fever, aches, and stubborn sinus or respiratory infection.
Your immune system creates, stores, and distributes the white blood cells that fight bacteria and viruses that enter your body, especially during cold and flu season.
Getting sick is no fun at all! YUK! We have a fever and/or cough, fatigued, headache along with the body aches and pains and just overall feel yuk. A cold of flu is triggered by so many factors. Stress, poor diet, excess or lack of exercise, and/or the strangers breathing all over you during your commute. Most people reach for fast relief from the drugstore shelf or run to the doctors office. I used to do the same but I found when I did that, there were usually lingering symptoms and I get sick again..or the medication did not work and I was still sick.
The bottom line is that a healthy body is dependent on a strong immune system; the good news is that there are many ways to perform immune-system upkeep and not just by avoiding some destructive habits, stressors, and toxins but by embracing natural immune boosters and adopting behaviors that support immunity.
Replacing bad health habits with good ones can help keep your immune system healthy. Check this list to see where you could use some improvement. You may have noticed you’re more likely to catch a cold or other infection when you’re not getting enough sleep. Usually 7-9 hours for an adult is good. Try to get atleast 30 minutes of exercise per day...go for that walk we talked about... Eating or drinking too much sugar curbs immune system cells that attack bacteria. This effect lasts for at least a few hours after downing a couple of sugary drinks. Trade off for a wide variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables including berries, citrus fruits, kiwi, apples, red grapes, kale, onions, spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots. If you come down with the flu or a cold reach for the chicken noodle soup ...and add a little garlic to your diet. Chronic stress exposes your body to a steady stream of stress hormones that suppress the immune system.
